Endangered Leopard
A Dead Leopard
Leopards are powerful predators in the wild. They adapt well to different environments and habitats. As a result, leopards constitute the largest population of the four big cat families, although the large number of leopards in some areas does not ensure their survival in others.

Even though many common leopards still remain in Africa, their population in Asia has decreased steadily in recent years. As a matter of fact, some subspecies of leopards, such as the Anatolian, North African, and South Arabian leopards, are considered endangered or critically endangered. Amur leopards, which live in Russia, northern China and Korea, are almost extinct. Fewer than fifty Amur leopards remain in the wild. Aanzibar leopards are probably already extinct. Action needs to be taken to rescue these leopard subspecies.

Like other big cats, leopards face many threats to their survival in the wild. The biggest threat comes from human beings. People kill large numbers of leopards for different reasons, but the result is the reduction of the overall population of leopards. Habitat loss and habitat deterioration are other major threats to leopards especially to the survival of some subspecies of leopards.
