The leopard’s coat is thick and soft. Females usually have softer coats than that of males. The primary color of its coat ranges from yellowish-cream to dark gold with black spots and rings. The black leopards mainly exist in rainforests of South and Southeast Asia. White-colored leopards exist but are extremely rare. Only few white leopards have been in captivity. Its undercoat - the coat on its chin, chest, belly, and inside upper legs – varies from lighter shades to almost white. Leopards have a long spotted tail with a black tip upper side and white tip underside.

The coat color of a leopard depends on where the animal lives. Leopards living in deserts and grasslands have cream to lighter-yellow coats to match the sand and dried grass. Those living in forests have dark-gold coats. Black-colored leopards usually live in rain forests where their black coats help them disappear into the dark shadows.

Leopards are often poached for their beautiful spotted fur. Fur coats made from leopard skins used to be favored by the fashionable rich, but the coats have become less popular in recent years as people realize that leopards are an endangered species.
