Leopard Sound
In general, leopards are relative quiet animals. When necessary, though, they do make some sounds, or vocalizations, to communicate with leopards or other animals. When female leopards are ready to mate, they make rasping growls to attract males. Leopard cubs meow to call to their mother. Leopards also grunt, roar, snarl, and hiss to send certain messages.
The leopard is a member of the feline family, which is roughly divided into two groups – purring feline and roaring felines. Roaring felines include the four big cats: lions, tigers, jaguars, and leopards. Only these four big cats can roar. All other cats, such as house cats, bobcats, lynx, and cougars, purr but they cannot roar. The leopard’s roar is more like a rasping cough. Female leopards roar when they are ready to mate. Male leopards roar to let other males know they have entered their territory. Like other big cats, leopards can also make purring sounds, but they cannot purr continually like domestic cats.
